What is flex space?
For those of you a little confused right now, let’s take a brief look at flex space.
The whole idea of flex space came out of the Dot.com period of time, back in the 1990s and 2000s. Companies found that a large portion of their workspace would sit idle for hours at a time, as workers were given the option of working from home, or working flexible hours depending on flexible schedules. Thus, in those office spaces, it was determined to set up a number of work stations which were all identical and could be used by any worker at any time. Instead of an employee coming to work and sitting down in his or her work station, they would come to work and choose any of dozens of identical work stations. It was office space for lease when you need it.
The concept then grew from there. The idea of coworking space comes from flex space. It has even expanded into industries like plumbing, electrical, and other “hands-on” businesses. A series of work areas can be found in one building, and workers, or individual companies, simply come use those work stations when they need one, only paying for the time they actually use the work station. The same concept is now used in large warehouses, two or three companies sharing a warehouse, partitioning off parts of a large warehouse to make two or three smaller warehouses, thus cutting their expenses, in essence a warehouse for rent when you need it.
